Proton Competition set to continue in FIA WEC GTE-Am in 2017

Proton Competition is expected to continue in the GTE-Am class of the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2017.

Team owner Christian Ried confirmed to Sportscar365 that Proton Competition would like to enter the 2015 spec Porsche 911 RSR instead of fielding the 2016 spec car due to the higher costs.

Proton Competition has already ruled out any GTE-Pro effort in 2017 as Porsche is set to return with a full factory effort and a brand new 911 RSR.

The German privateer Porsche team is competing this year in FIA WEC with three cars. The #77 Porsche 911 (2016 spec) in GTE-Pro under Dempsey Proton Racing. In GTE-Am Proton Competition fields two 2015 spec cars, the #88 Porsche 911 RSR under Abu Dhabi Proton Racing and the #78 Porsche 911 RSR as KCMG. Proton Competition is also running a pair of Porsche 911 RSRs in the European Le Mans Series.

The GTE-Am class in 2017 will welcome the 2016 spec GTE cars including the Ferrari 488 GTE. As a result the ACO will balance the two generations of cars.
