Fast but unlucky Abu-Dhabi Proton Racing at 6 Hours of Spa

A last-minute contact by an LMP2 car ruined Abu Dhabi-Proton Racing’s certain 2nd place finish in class at Round 2 of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, in Belgium.

The Abu Dhabi-Proton Racing team was behind the wheel of the no.88 Porsche 911 RSR and comprises of Emirati Khaled Al Qubaisi, Heinemeier Hansson of Denmark and Patrick Long of the USA.

Having qualified third in class, Long opened the six-hour incident-filled campaign with both Al Qubaisi and Hansson then keeping the team in the hunt for a second place finish. However, with barely 13 minutes to go to the finish, an LMP2 car made contact with the #88 Porsche 911 RSR that ended Abu Dhabi-Proton Racing’s brilliant Spa campaign.

Team leader Khaled Al Qubaisi said:

After running second we were taken out by an LMP2 car. Unfortunate really as the whole team had worked very hard for this result the entire weekend.

However, we are taking away many positives from the Spa campaign and we will continue to push for the rest of the season.

Al Qubaisi and team are now eagerly looking forward to the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans from June 18-19. Al Qubaisi finished 2nd place in class in 2014 and Patrick Long finished 2nd as well in last year’s edition.
