Davide Rigon had a perfect weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, home to the second round of the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship.
The Italian driver has clinched a second straight victory in this year's competition with the brand new Ferrari 488 GTE. Davide Rigon shared the AF Corse run car with fellow Ferrari works driver Sam Bird.
The two drivers started from pole position and were running in a strong second place in GTE-Pro class all race long. With eight minutes to go the sister #51 Ferrari 488 GTE of James Calado and Gianmaria Bruni was forced to retire with engine issues. The #71 Ferrari corssed the finish line in first position with Rigon and Bird extending their championship point lead.
Davide Rigon was delighted with the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps victory and looks forward to the next event, Le Mans.
This is it, second victory for the #71, incredible! Sam started the race, unfortunately going through the LMP2 cars and getting the P2 behind the #51, anyway always very fast during the entire race.
Our car was great, a perfect race thanks to all the team AF Corse, no problem even choosing the tires. Unluckily we had a bad position on the pit lane, so we were losing always few seconds during the pit stop. 6 long hours, they were not passing so fast, but I’m glad we didn’t get any problem on our car. At 10 minutes to go, the #51 had a mechanical issue unfortunately, so we had a chance to pass them and getting the victory.
Now we are at the first place of the championship, already focused on the next race, the 24 hours of Le Mans which is the most important race of the championship.
