Christina Nielsen begins the European portion of a packed 2016 endurance racing season today at the historic Silverstone circuit, looking to follow up an historic win at the world famous 12 Hours of Sebring last month in Florida, USA with another good result.
The 4-hour race on Sunday marks the opening round of the 2016 European Le Mans Series (ELMS) where Christina will compete with the 2015 Championship-winning team, Formula Racing, to complete an all-Danish driver squad in its Ferrari 458 Italia GTE.
It’s great to be here with such a great team, and at such a great circuit. The win at Sebring was fantastic of course, but now we need to focus on Europe, I can’t wait.
The Formula Racing Ferrari is one of 44 cars on the Silverstone entry with nine cars racing in the Ferrari’s GTE class.
Christina’s European programme includes not only the ELMS but also the fabled Le Mans 24 Hours in June, where she will again join Formula racing alongside fellow Danish drivers Johnny Laursen and Mikkel Mac.
That’s a fantastic highlight to the year to look forward to but the focus now is on Silverstone. We have practice sessions to help me to get more attuned to the car, and with very changeable weather conditions here to get used to the Dunlop tyres, unlike the brand new Ferrari 488 that we won with at Sebring, the 458 GTE does not have anti-lock braking.
It’s a faster car, and I love the challenge of getting the most out of it. We are looking for the win of course but I always aim for a podium finish, and then look for any opportunity to improve.
That will be tough here, but I enjoy the challenge, and this is a team that knows how to win these races. In racing you are only as good as your last result - mine was a big win in America, it would be great to carry that forward with another good result.
The 4 Hours of Silverstone starts at 14:30 GMT on Saturday 16 April.
