BMW Team RLL's Bill Auberlen was the fastest in a thrilling and close IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship qualifying session at Long Beach.
Behind the wheel of the #25 BMW M6 GTLM, the American GT ace set the fastest time in class with 1:17.272. He will be sharing the car with Dirk Werner in the Saturday race.
I had my doubts about a car as luxurious and big as the BMW M6 on the tiny streets with walls around you, and I think my doubts have been put to the side. I am so happy for the team, they know how to set up any car here and Michelin always give us the right choice of tires.
Porsche North America performed well in qualifying. Earl Bamber and Frederic Makowiecki were second fastest with the #912 Porsche 911 RSR. Their team-mates Patrick Pilet and Nick Tandy will start from position three on the grid with the sister #911 Porsche 911 RSR.
The two cars from Corvette Racing were fourth and fifth, the #4 C7.R of Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner ahead of the sister #3 Corvette of Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen.
BMW's John Edwards and Lucas Lhur were sixth fastest with the #100 BMW M6 GTLM. Joey Hand and Dirk Werner were seventh with the #66 Ford GT. Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander were eighth with the #62 #Ferrari 488 GTE. Alessandro Balzan and Daniel Serra were ninth with the #68 Ferrari 488 GTE.
The #67 Ford GT didn't take part in the qualifying session, the car caught fire in practice with Richard Westbrook behind the wheel, the driver was uninjured.
