Porsche has dominated the Rolex 24 at Daytona qualifying session. The German brand set the fastest two best times with a fine 1-2 for the works Porsche 911 RSRs.
It was a true GT Le Mans parade in qualifying. The Grand Touring cars took full advantage of the wet weather and track conditions and dominated the much faster Prototypes. The first seven places were all taken by GTLM machines. However the Prototypes cars will start first at the start of the race. IMSA rules don't allow GT cars to start from the front overall.
The pair of new updated Porsche 911 RSR cars were the best. Nick Tandy, Patrick Pilet and Kevin Estre were the fastest overall with a best time of 2:01.408.
Their team-mates at Porsche North America, Earl Bamber, Frederic Makowiecki and Christensen were second fastest with a best time of 2:02.364.
The top-three in GTLM was completed by the #100 BMW M6 GTLM driven by Lucas Luhr, John Edwards, KunoWittmer and Graham Rahal.
The Ferraris performed well too. The #68 488 GTE from Scuderia Corsa was fourth ahead of the #62 Ferrari from Risi Competizione in fifth.
Best of the works Corvette Racing cars was the #4 Corvette C7.R in sixth place. The #25 BMW M6 GTLM was seventh. The #3 Corvette C7.R was eighth in GTLM class (11th overall).
It was a frustrating session for Ford Chip Ganassi Racing. The #66 Ford GT was ninth in class (15th overall) and the #67 Ford GT was tenth (25th overall).
The #72 Ferrari 488 GTE from SMP Racing didn't set a time in qualifying. Ferrari star Gianmaria Bruni went off track and hit turn 1's barrier. Fortunately the Italian driver was unharmed.
